During the Civil War, employment opportunities for women opened up, from nursing to army laundresses to spies. Women assumed clerical positions in the U.S. government, turned their homes into cottage factories and disguised themselves as men in order to serve on the battlefield. Using historical photographs and current research, this presentation tells the fascinating story of women’s work during the Civil War, with special emphasis on notable Kansas women.
