Join Jennifer LaGarde—teacher librarian, digital teaching and learning specialist, award-winning blogger, social media superstar, author and speaker—as she proves you don’t have to be super hero to be a librarian, but having a cape sure helps.
7:30 – 8:00 Registration and coffee
8:00 – 11:15 Fact vs. Fiction: The Role of School Librarians in Teaching Media Literacy—Explore the fake news phenomenon and its impact on students, educators and society. Test your source evaluation skills, and discover ways to lead the heroic charge as defenders of facts.
11:15 – 12:15 On-your-own lunch—Feel free to dine out or to bring a lunch and dine in the conference room.
12:15 – 1:45 Creating the Libraries of Tomorrow for the Students of Today—Transform your library into a place where students engage with information and each other to ask big questions and solve real problems as they use technology to create, design and engineer new knowledge.
2:00 – 3:30 Brainz! How to Survive the Zombie Librarian Apocalypse—Identify the characteristics that define this dreaded plague threatening school libraries everywhere, and learn how to combat it using technology, learning networks and authentic collaboration!
Presenter Jennifer LaGarde is a lifelong teacher and learner with over 20 years in public education. Her educational passions include leveraging technology to help students develop authentic reading lives, meeting the unique needs of students living in poverty and helping learners (of all ages) discern fact from fiction in the information they consume. She's also the coauthor of the book Fact VS Fiction: Teaching Critical Thinking in the Age of Fake News with Darren Hudgins. This workshop will be held in room 180 of the Wichita State University Hughes Metropolitan Complex, located at the intersection of 29th Street and North Oliver. Registration is limited to 50 SCKLS library staff members. Registration deadline for SCKLS library staff is Friday, January 3, 2020. Light refreshments will be provided compliments of SCKLS.
