Managing problematic behaviors with compassion is a daily challenge in libraries serving diverse patrons, especially those who are confrontational, disoriented or suffering from mental illness or substance addictions.
Join guest presenter Ryan Dowd, author of The Librarian’s Guide to Homelessness: An Empathy-Driven Approach to Solving Problems, Preventing Conflicts, and Serving Everyone, for an engaging and interactive exploration of this relevant topic.
Learn practical tools that empower you with the know-how and confidence to handle:

• Empathetic-driven enforcement of library rules and expectations

Workshop presenter is Ryan Dowd, executive director of a large homeless shelter outside of Chicago, Illinois. In addition to running the shelter, Dowd trains libraries, nonprofits, police departments, hospitals and other organizations. His book, The Librarian’s Guide to Homelessness, was published by the American Library Association. Ryan is a licensed attorney and has a Master of Public Administration.
This workshop will be held in room 180 of the Wichita State University Metropolitan Complex, located at the intersection of 29th Street and North Oliver. Complimentary morning refreshments will be provided by SCKLS. Registration is limited. Registration deadline is Tuesday, October 1, 2019.
Book discussion opportunity: SCKLS will host a book discussion about Dowd’s book The Librarian’s Guide to Homelessness on Tuesday, November 12, 2019. Book discussion registrants may pick up a complimentary copy of the book at the Semi-annual Program in October, then join in an informed conversation about empathy-driven library service a month later at SCKLS in South Hutchinson. Lunch will be provided! The book discussion will be limited to 25 registrants—only one staff member per library, please. Deadline for registration is Monday, September 30, 2019.
