|Library Talks: YA Diverse Books--Build Your Library's Connections and Collection|
Event Type: Continuing Education|
Start Time: 9:00 AM
End Time: 12:00 PM
Young adult access to diverse books is a hot topic in the library community these days, with a host of hashtags, chats, grassroots organizations and experts leading the conversation. As a professional, you understand it’s your responsibility to be abreast of industry trends. However, you may find yourself wondering how your library and its young patrons fit into this particular conversation.
Join Robyn Bravi, SCKLS Technology Consultant and YA aficionado, as she introduces you to definitions, tools, resources, strategies, and YA titles that will empower you with knowledge and confidence to join the conversation, to begin making decisions based on your community’s needs, and to communicate effectively with patrons and your board. Plus, choose your own complimentary YA diverse title and have access to a Goodreads book group.
• Why a diverse book collection is essential and beneficial to teens in your community
• How to envision a library policy that supports your diverse book decisions
• Usable strategies that guide teens to just-right books that cultivate perspective
• Professional resources—like Booklist, NoveList, YALSA award lists and ALA guidelines—that will help with your collection development and reader’s advisory
This important SCKLS Library Talk will help you gain perspective, ideas and inspiration to showcase your YA diverse book collection and enhance your connections with young readers.
Registration is limited to 12 participants and the deadline for registration is Wednesday, September 19, 2018. This training may be used toward acquiring a Basic Library Skills Training (BLaST) certificate. Light snacks will be offered compliments of SCKLS.
