Maintaining a healthy library collection that meets the needs of patrons may seem like a daunting task to library newcomers. Let Nicole Penley, Outreach Services Specialist, break down the collection development cycle for you in this informative and useful workshop. Answer practical questions like, what is a collection development plan and why is it important? What are different phases of a collection maintenance cycle? In addition, you will tackle the issue of which books and materials to purchase and which to remove to build a useful, appealing collection.
Learn how to:
• Identify the general parts of a collection development plan, or policy, and understand their significance to your library
• Recognize the stages of the collection development cycle at work in your library
• Weed effectively utilizing knowledge of “MUSTIE” and other factors
• Select new materials for your library based on best-practice criteria and guidelines as well as helpful review sources
Cultivating your library’s collection will be easier and more efficient with the general knowledge base and resources that you will gain at this Basic Library Skills Training (BLaST) program.
