The International OCD Foundation estimates between 700,000 and 1.4 million people in the United States exhibit compulsive hoarding behavior. Hoarding is defined by the Mayo Clinic as the excessive collection of items, along with the inability to discard them. Hoarding creates cramped living conditions and homes filled to capacity, creating unsafe living environments. Learn about aspects of hoarding, the economic and social impacts of hoarding, explore coaching techniques to learn to address people who hoard, as well as resources available for individuals and families to address this problem. This subject has implications for Seniors, since the incidence of hoarding behavior increases with age, as does the risk of falling or being injured in an unsafe living environment.
